Clay Aiken on the Cover of the Rolling Stone

On July 10, 2003 Clay Aiken became the first American Idol contestant to grace the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. Clay's cover went on to be one of the best selling issues of that year.

Started by Jann Wenner, the very first Rolling Stone was published on November 9, 1967 with John Lennon on the cover. The magazine has grown - gaining the reputation as an influential music, political and cultural power house.

Rolling Stone was one of Clay's most memorable photo shoots. The photographer, Matthew Rolston, seemed to bring out a side of Clay we had never seen before.

Matthew also went on to direct Clay Aiken's first music video, This Is The Night. This video was never released to any music channels but was later included on a special version of On My Way Here (Clay's newest CD released May of 2008) exclusively through QVC. While I agree that the video has nothing to do with the song, it is a feast for the eyes and the ears. Take a peek, do you agree?

As far as I am concerned Clay Aiken is the only person from American Idol that deserved to be on the cover of RS.

great pictures and I love that video, even though Clay did not! LOL

I'll bet Clay Aiken really felt he'd entered an alternate universe with that photo shoot.

Hooray for Clay!!
I'll never forget how finding that precious Rolling Stone issue at the store was like finding gold! The girl unpacking the new magazine shipments didn't even have them on the shelf yet..I asked her to look for it. She said I was the third person to do that, and by the time she got the unpacking done there might not be any left. I never saw it at any store again. I asked a number of places & all said they sold them out within minutes!
What a guy Clay Aiken is..just the best!

I still have my Clay Aiken Rolling Stone magazine. I loved that interview. I wonder if he could ever have imagined back then, six years ago, what an amazing career he would go on to have!

Clay has certainly grown since that video. It seemed that the video was an attempt to market him to be a pop star. He wanted to go down a different road.

It's been six years, unbelievable. Time really does fly when you are having fun.

I love that sweater picture! That long neck, that perfect jawline. I don't think I've ever seen a better profile on a man.
